ATLANTA (Sept. 7, 2007) The Georgia State University men's soccer team battled through double overtime to a 0-0 tie against the Wofford Terriers Friday afternoon at Panthersville Athletic Complex.
“Although we didn't come out with a win, the tie is a good result for both teams,” said head coach Kerem Daser. “Both teams had chances but couldn't capitalize and that is attributed to great defense on both sides.”
The Panthers (0-1-1) had 11 shots on the day and four shots on goal, but were unable to close on scoring opportunities. Junior forward Dathan Knott led State with four shots, with one on goal. Midfielder Floreal Pedrazo recorded two with one on goal, and midfielders Eduardo Liza, Javon Carrington, Joe Devito, Brian Forero, and defender Tim Lonergan took one shot a piece.
“Tim Lonergan played an outstanding game as defender and took a lot of head shots in the air,” said Daser. “He has one of the biggest hearts and he shows a lot of leadership.”
Defensively, State matched the aggression of the Terriers and maintained a solid defense in the backfield under the leadership of defenders, junior Spenser Sumpter, senior Justin Davis, and Tim Lonergan. Junior goalkeeper Filipe Carvalho finished with six saves and recorded his first shutout of the season.
“Overall, today we played a lot better than last week. We played a hard 90 minutes of soccer,” stated Daser. “We still have room to improve, one being working on finishing.”
The Terriers led the Panthers in shots and shots on goal, finishing with 13 and seven, respectively. Junior goalkeeper Joe Taylor finished with five saves and recorded his fifth shutout of his career.
Georgia State travels to Nashville, Tenn. on Sunday to face Lipscomb University.
