Macon, Ga. (September 13, 2008) Senior midfielder Linus Warendh scored the only Panther goal as the Georgia State men's soccer team fell to Alabama A&M 4-1 at the Mercer University Wingate by Windham Classic.
The Panthers got on the board early when Warendh connected with the ball from 15 yards out and sent it past Alabama A&M goalkeeper, Paul Musoke, into the upper left corner of the goal. This marks Warendh's third goal of the season. He now leads the team in goals. "That was a world class goal from Linus this afternoon. His free kicks have really improved and that has shown this season," remarked Georgia State head coach Kerem Daser.
The Panthers were unable to hold onto the lead as the Bulldogs evened the score in the 33rd minute on a penalty kick. Alabama A&M kept their momentum and recorded two goals early in the second half. The final Bulldogs goal came in the 82nd minute.
Seniors Spenser Sumpter, Dathan Knott, and Francesco Barbera, sophomore Joe Castaldo, and junior Stephan Minyono each recorded a shot a piece for the afternoon.
"I was disappointed in the second half of today's match, but Alabama A&M was the better team today. I believe that we learned from today and will go into tomorrow's game against Mercer and take this lesson with us," said Daser.
The Panthers are now 2-2 on the season and play tomorrow, Sunday September 14th at 3 p.m. as they take on the Bears from Mercer University in their final game of the Wingate by Windham Classic.
