Men?s Soccer Shuts Out Wofford 2-0

Spartanburg, SC (September 21, 2008) Stephan Minyono and Ayokunle Lumpkin scored a goal a piece to help lift the Georgia State men's soccer team 2-0 over Wofford and record its second shut out of the season in the final game of the Wofford/Nike Men's Soccer Classic on Sunday afternoon.

The Panthers (4-2-1) put their first mark on the board at 5:02 when Minyono played a long through ball down the right side to Lumpkin, who beat the on-coming Terrier goalkeeper, Joey Taylor, near the corner of the 18-yard box. That is Lumpkin's second goal this season.

Georgia State's second goal game in the 89th minute when freshman Jacob Hamilton recorded his first career assist and passed the ball to Minyono, who crossed it into the front of the net. This marks the fourth goal by Minyono this season. He now leads the team in goals. Minyono also tops the CAA conference with 11 points and is tied for the league lead in goals with four.

Senior Linus Warendh led the Panthers' offense with four shots, while midfielder Joe DeVito added three shots. Warendh now leads the team in shots, with 16 for the season. Sophomore Joey Syfert also contributed one shot for the afternoon. "Joe had a great weekend. It was exciting to see him back in action after being out for a few weeks. He has great leadership with this team and shows tremendous speed down the right side," said Georgia State head coach Kerem Daser.

In goal, senior Filipe Carvalho recorded seven saves in the contest and records his second shut out of the season. "Filipe had an outstanding afternoon. He had a great high save towards the end of the game to keep the shut out," commented Daser

Three Panthers were named to the All-Tournament squad following the conclusion of the Wofford/Nike Men's Soccer Classic. The Panther representatives were seniors Spenser Sumpter and Joe DeVito, and junior Stephan Minyono. DeVito tallied seven shots for the weekend with one on goal, while Minyono recorded two goals and one assist to finish out the Classic. Each school was represented on the all-tournament team following a nomination of the respective head coaches.

"We played against a very good Wofford team this afternoon. It was very back and forth for the first half and I was wondering if we were going to be able to keep the lead and finish the game. This afternoon was a total team effort. I like the fact that we're having many different players scoring goals and I'm very proud of Filipe and the defenders in the back for getting the shut out. It was good for us to get the tie on Friday afternoon and then come away with the win today. It definitely helps us get ready for our first CAA game against Hofstra this weekend," finished Daser.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, September 27th as they travel to Hofstra University at 7 p.m. Check GeorgiaStateSports.com for updates following the game.
