Atlanta, Ga. (September 6, 2008)
Stephan Minyono,
Ayokunle Lumpkin, and
Dathan Knott scored a goal a piece as the Georgia State men's soccer team shut out the Presbyterian Blue Hose 3-0.
The Panthers (1-1) recorded their first win of the season as they shut out the Blue Hose from Presbyterian College on Saturday afternoon at Panthersville. The men's soccer team held Presbyterian to only one shot on goal for the game. The Panthers out shot the Blue Hose 12-4.
Junior midfielder
Stephan Minyono scored the first goal for the Panthers with help from an assist from sophomore defender
Michael Clarke. Minyono headed and grounded off a pass from Clarke and was able to send the ball past the Presbyterian goalkeeper, Andrew Brandt. “I'm very proud of Stephan and his first half goal. I really think that helped us to get started,” commented Georgia State Coach
Kerem Daser.
The Panthers kept the momentum going into the second half as sophomore
Ayokunle Lumpkin headed the ball into the goal off of a right side pass from senior midfielder
Eduardo Liza. Lumpkin finished the afternoon with three shots on goal and one goal scored.
Liza also recorded the assist for the Panthers third goal of the afternoon as he serviced the ball to senior forward
Dathan Knott who was able to score. Knott recorded three shots on goal for the day.
“Eduardo played a big game in the second half. He had great service down the right side. I wasn't happy with his performance in the first half, but he really made a big difference and was on fire for the second half,” remarked Daser.
“Today we played a very good Presbyterian team. It's a team that shows great teamwork, commitment, discipline, and organization. After the Clemson game I wasn't sure what to expect today. But I believe that the seniors stepped up their game and showed great leadership, especially
Filipe Carvalho,
Spenser Sumpter,
Eduardo Liza, and
Francesco Barbera. It was a tough Presbyterian team, and I liked that we only allowed them one shot. You win games on defending and the team did a great job defensively today,” finished Daser.
The Panthers are now 1-1 on the season and look forward to the next home match on Monday, September 8th at 4 p.m. as they take on the Spartans from USC Upstate.
