Atlanta (November 7, 2009) The Georgia State men's soccer team (4-11-1) lost a heartbreaker in overtime against Wofford (10-2-3), 2-1, on Senior Day in Panthersville. The Panthers bid farewell to Stephan Minyono and Brett Cummins to end the 2009 season.
Georgia State battled Wofford, who won the Southern Conference regular season championship, to a 1-1 tie through regulation. Wofford struck the final blow in the 96th minute when Armin Kinigadner fired a shot from outside the box to give Wofford the 2-1 victory in overtime.
"This was an exciting night for our team, proud of the way we fought out there. Wofford has played well all season long and give credit to them, we can learn a lesson from them about winning close matches, said Head Coach Kerem Daser."
The Panthers honored their two seniors Stephan Minyono and Brett Cummins before the match. Cummins finished the match with one shot on goal and Minyono had a couple of good opportunities that just didn't go his way.
"It was nice to see Stephan and Brett get honored tonight, they really played hard in their final match and we wish them the best of luck in the future."
Wofford got on the board first in the 13th minute when Kentrel Owens found Yakov Rubinchik who scored his second goal of the season beating Panthers' goalkeeper Vincent Foermer to give the Terriers the 1-0 advantage.
Georgia State answered in the 32nd minute when freshman Gimel Gordon crossed the ball inside the box when fellow freshman Alex Vivanco fired a shot to beat the Wofford keeper to even the score at 1-1. Vivanco scored his first goal of the season and earned Gordon his second assist of the year.
"It was a great pass from Gimel to Vivanco and he made a nice shot to get us back into the match. We now know what we have to do in the spring and we will be working hard to improve next season, added Kerem Daser."
Freshman goalkeeper Foermer finished the match with five saves to finish his first year in goal with 75 saves.
