Boca Raton, Fla. - After two overtimes, Georgia State had to settle for another 1-1 draw against Florida Atlanta on Friday night. Transfer Freshman Michael Nwiloh scored his first goal as a Panther in the first half.
Georgia State struck first in the game in the 27th minute, when sophomore Victor Nkhoma was awarded a corner kick. Off the corner, Nkhoma found teammate Nwiloh, who placed the ball into the back of the net to give the Panthers an early 1-0 advantage.
"It was good to see Michael Nwiloh score a goal and it was the first goal off a corner kick for us," said Brett Surrency. "He has been great defensively for us and it was nice to see him get rewarded with a goal tonight."
Georgia State ended the first half with a 5-to-1 advantage in shots, including two shots on goal.
The Owls found the equalizer in the 73rd minute, when Lukas Simons fired a shot that beat Panthers' keeper Vincent Foermer in the right corner of the net to even the game at 1-1.
Just two minutes later, Florida Atlantic was awarded a penalty kick, when the Panthers committed a foul inside the box. Sophomore keeper Foermer came up with a game saving stop to keep the game tied at 1-1.
"That was a big time save from Vincent Foermer and it kept us tied in the game," said Surrency.
Senior Joe Castaldo had an opportunity in the 83rd minute but his shot was stopped by Owls' keeper James McCormick.
The Panthers finished the game with 14 shots including four on goal but just couldn't find the game winner in the overtimes.
"The guys really dug deep in the overtimes, we just couldn't put them away," said Surrency. "I am hoping that these overtime games will eventually lead to wins in the future, we had chances in both overtimes."
Georgia State returns to action on Sunday against Florida International in Miami, Fla. at 1 p.m.
