ATLANTA - The Georgia State men's soccer team (3-0-2) remained unbeaten with a 2-0 victory over Presbyterian College on Friday night in Panthersville. Senior Darryl Evans scored the game winning goal in the second half and sophomore Alex Vivanco added an insurance goal for the Panthers in the win.
The Panthers started the second half aggressively, four minutes into the half senior Darryl Evans took a pass from sophomore Victor Nkhoma, who blasted a shot into the upper left corner of the net to provide the game winning goal. Coming at the 49:11 mark, it was Evans first goal of his career.
"I mean what a goal, he absolutely crushed it," said head coach Brett Surrency. "To be fair he had quite a few of those in training this week from similar spots. We were disappointed in the first half, and to get that goal early in the second half, the energy really picked up from there."
Georgia State added an insurance goal in the 60th minute when sophomore Vivanco took a shot from outside the box and placed it perfectly in the upper left corner of the net to make the score 2-0. It was Vivanco's second goal of the season.
"I didn't know there could be a goal better than Darryl's and then Vivanco came and proved me wrong," said Surrency. "He has been big for us and he is a guy we are starting to lean on."
The Panthers would hold on for their first shutout of the season and starting goalkeeper Vincent Foermer's first clean sheet of the 2010 season. Foermer finished the game with three saves in the win.
In the first half of play, both teams played to a 0-0 draw with the shots equal at 7-7 to end the first half. The Panthers had a couple of opportunities but shots went wide and the half finished tied.
The Panthers finished the game with 18 shots including four on goal and allowed just one shot from Presbyterian College in the second half.
"We are looking to build towards conference and that's the last step until conference," said Surrency. "We are trying to play our best soccer and we had some flashes tonight."
Georgia State returns to action on Sunday against in-state rival Mercer in Macon, Ga. at 4 p.m.
