Men's Tennis Continues Streak, Downs Presbyterian, 6-1

Clinton, S.C. - The Georgia State men's tennis team (10-3) won its fifth straight match with a 6-1 victory over Presbyterian Sunday in Clinton, S.C. Sophomore Lucas Santana clinched the match with a straight sets victory at No. 6 singles.

Georgia State has won nine of its last ten matches.

"It was a nice road victory for us," said head coach Chase Hodges. "We have won five in a row and the guys are getting accustomed to winning. It was good to see Gabe Townes and Juan Pablo Gutierrez get solid victories today."

With the Panthers leading 3-0 overall, Santana closed out the match by winning 6-2, 6-0 over Zachary Sprouse at No. 6 singles. Santana, a native of Brazil, won his fifth straight match and improved to 11-2 overall in singles.

Georgia State won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Victor Valente/Thomas Cook won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles, securing their fifth straight win and a 5-1 overall record. Juan Pablo Gutierrez/Lucas Santana won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles to give the Panthers the doubles point.

Freshman Gabe Townes picked up a straight sets win, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 singles.

Junior Juan Pablo Gutierrez followed with a win at No. 5 singles, also in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

After Santana's clincher, freshman Vincent Verpeaux gave Georgia State a 5-0 lead with a straight sets victory, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 4 singles. Verpeaux has won five straight matches to improve to 11-2 overall in singles.

Sophomore Victor Valente pushed the lead to 6-0 after winning in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. Valente earned his fifth straight win and now has a 10-3 mark in singles.

Freshman Thomas Cook fell in the final match in a third-set super tiebreaker at No. 3 singles. Cook lost the first set 7-5, then won the second set 6-2. In the super tiebreaker Cook battled but lost 12-10, giving Presbyterian its only win of the match.

Georgia State returns to action on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Kennesaw State at 12:30 p.m. and Georgia Southwestern at 5 p.m. at Piedmont Park.
