Weise's Late Goal Lifts Men's Soccer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Freshman midfielder Jordan Weise scored a goal with 4:43 left to lead the Georgia State men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Lipscomb Friday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn., in the season opener for both teams.

The freshman from Lake Park, Ga., dashed from the left side across the box, corralled a loose ball sent in from the right and buried a right-footed strike after deking Lipscomb goalkeeper Brent McGee. Weise's goal highlighted a dominating effort from GSU (1-0-0), which outshot Lipscomb 10-2 for the match.

"I'm excited because we showed the ability to create chances more so than we did last year," head coach Brett Surrency said after the win. "Credit the guys for creating chances because they did a nice job of reading the way Lipscomb defended and adjusting our attack to that."

Any Lipscomb threat that pierced the stout Panthers' back line was answered by junior goalkeeper Vincent Foermer (1-0-0). Foermer made one save while the back line of Bo Stroup, Chris Locandro, Peter Vania and Michael Nwiloh bottlenecked the Bison (0-1-0) offense to earn the shutout victory.

"[Lipscomb striker] Garret Pettis will be one of the top strikers in the Atlantic Sun this year and I thought we did a great job keeping him off the board," Surrency said, "I thought Vania and Locandro were very good; they are steady and get the job done."

Georgia State pressured Lipscomb with vigor early. The Panthers also posted numerous quality scoring chances throughout that game that could have widened the margin of victory.

"One thing we have to get better at is finishing our chances," Surrency said, "We had a lot of chances and we could have made the game a lot less dramatic had we put the ball in the net. But it's a win and we're happy to be 1-0."

The Panthers improved their all-time mark over Lipscomb to 6-0 with the victory.

The Panthers move on to face USF next Friday in Tampa, Fla. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
