ORLANDO - The Georgia State men's soccer team was defeated by Central Florida 5-1 Tuesday night at the UCF Soccer Academy in Orlando, Fla. The Panthers fall to 5-6-1 this season, while the Knights improve to 5-4-1.
UCF grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute on Omar Vallejo's third goal of the season. Jake Weiss and Romario Williams combined to find Vallejo, who beat GSU goalkeeper CJ Cochran with a header.
In the 11th minute, Stephen McGill fired a shot on goal but Central Florida goalie Sebastian Evers made the save to keep the Knights ahead 1-0. One minute later, UCF doubled their lead when Fernando Laverde assisted on Williams seventh goal this year.
UCF added a third goal in the 34th minute when Vallejo found the back of the net for the second time in the match. Laverde sent a corner kick into the box, Joe Amico passed to Vallejo and he slotted it into the back of the net.
The Knights scored again in the 55th minute to extend their lead to 4-0. Matthew Gaskins passed the ball to Laverde who fired a shot into the bottom right corner from inside the penalty area.
GSU nearly found the back of the net in the 63rd minute, but Jamal Keene's attempt was just high and deflected off the crossbar. Six minutes later, Matt Laux scored his first goal of the season to give Central Florida a 5-0 lead.
Georgia State grabbed a late consolation goal in the 77th minute when Caleb Kernan scored his first goal of the season. However, it was too little too late and the Knights were victorious 5-1.
For the match, GSU took one more shot than UCF (8-7), but Central Florida held the edge in shots on goal (6-3). Neither team took a corner kick in the second half.
Georgia State returns to the field Saturday, Oct. 19 when they travel to face West Virginia. The match is set to kickoff at 7 p.m. ET.
