ATLANTA--Senior Victor
Valente's undefeated day against two nationally-prominent singles players
highlighted the No. 60-ranked Georgia State men's tennis team's Sunday to cap a
busy weekend slate of matches.
Georgia
State (7-5) dropped two 4-2 matches on the day, first to George Washington in
the morning and against No. 61-ranked South Alabama in the afternoon. The
Panthers won an eight-hour match 4-3 the night before against the College of
Charleston to finish the weekend with a 1-2 record.
Valente
began the day with an efficient 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 1 position against GW's
Francisco Dias. Dias is the reigning 2012 Atlantic 10 Conference Most
Outstanding Performer and Most Outstanding Rookie Performer. Dias was a
nationally-ranked singles player in the first rankings issued this season and
competed in the singles event at the ITA All-American Championships last fall.
The
senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, then notched a 6-0, 6-2 win vs. No. 49-ranked
Daniel Leitner of South Alabama. The win marked Valente's fourth against a
nationally-ranked singles opponent this season. He is now 9-2 and owns a
four-match winning streak.
"Obviously
Victor was outstanding today and he is a player that always plays at a high
level no matter the opponent," first-year head coach Joerg Barthel said. "I
thought today Victor set a great example of how to fight for every point and
close out matches."
The
Panthers completed the South Alabama match that began on Friday with the
doubles point with singles play on Sunday. GSU earned the doubles point by
winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions.
The
Panthers dropped a 4-2 match against George Washington to begin the day. Schulze
won a match at No. 4 singles vs. Alexander van Gils by a 6-3, 6-4 margin. It
was the junior's third-consecutive singles victory on the season.
Georgia
State looks to bounce back during a busy stretch of matches next week. The
Panthers first travel uptown to take on cross-town rival Georgia Tech on
Thursday before hosting three matches next weekend. Visit the men's tennis page
