ATLANTA--Seniors Victor
Valente and Lucas Santa Ana set a school record with an 8-6 upset of the No.
3-ranked doubles team in the ITA National Doubles rankings during an intense
doubles point prior to a narrow 4-3 loss at No. 67-ranked Georgia Tech.
Valente
and Santa Ana fell behind 6-4 after Yellow Jackets senior Juan Spir and sophomore
Vikram Hundal broke serve. But the GSU duo fought back with a break to cut the
deficit to one and then held on Santa Ana's serve to tie the match. The two
fought for a break in the next game and Valente held his serve to record the
victory.
Santa
Ana and Valente are now 11-0 in doubles this season and the win was their first
over a nationally-ranked opponent in their careers. The win was also the first
doubles victory for a GSU team over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2009.
That year GSU's Nejc Podkrajsek and Martin Shishkov defeated Nebraska's No.
17-ranked Calin Paar and David Bendheim.
Valente's
big day continued into singles play. The senior won a 6-4, 6-4 match at the top
singles position against No. 53-ranked Juan Spir. The win was Valente's third
over a nationally-ranked singles opponent this spring. He is on a five match
winning streak in singles play. Valente now has two straight victories over
Spir after defeating him 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 score at the ITA Southeast Regional
Championships last October.
Junior
Robert Schulze tied the team score at one when he won a 6-4, 2-1 match via a
retirement at No. 3 singles. It is his third singles victory in a row and his
first this season at the No. 3 position. Following Valente's victory, Schulze's
win gave GSU the 2-1 advantage.
Sophomore
Sofiane Chevallier snapped a four-match slide in singles play with a 6-3, 6-1
victory at No. 6 singles against Anish Sharma. Chevallier's victory put GSU up
3-1 in the team score.
Georgia
Tech won a closely-fought doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3
positions. At one point, all three matches were simultaneously tied 6-6 during
the pro sets.
