LEXINGTON, Ky. – A goal in the 86th minute proved to be the difference Sunday afternoon, as the Georgia State men's soccer team fell to Kentucky 1-0. The Panthers fall to 0-2 this season while the Wildcats improve to 1-0.
After a slow start to the match, Kentucky went on the attack in the 25th minute. Kentucky's Tyler Riggs fired a shot on goal but GSU's goalkeeper CJ Cochran was there to make the save. Riggs collected the rebound sent a second shot on goal but Cochran was again there to make the save.
Neither team threatened again until the 42nd minute when Cochran recorded his third save on the half on Kaelon Fox's shot. The half ended with the score tied 0-0. The Wildcats held the edge in shots (5-2) and corner kicks taken (3-2) in the first 45 minutes of action.
Kentucky attacked early in the second half, when a shot by Isak Krogstad in the 49th minute forced Cochran to make his fourth save. Both teams continued to push forward in search of the opening goal which finally came in the 86th minute.
Brad Doliner gave the Wildcats the lead with a header past Cochran's outstretched arms. Krogstad and Bryan Celis were credited with the assist on Doliner's first goal of the season. GSU had one chance to equalize in the 90th minute but Neil Rajendran's shot was too high, and the match ended 1-0 in favor of Kentucky.
Overall, Kentucky finished with nine shots, including five on target. GSU on the other hand attempted eights shots but only one was on goal. Callum Irving received the win for the Wildcats to improve to 1-0 on the season. Georgia State's Cochran finished with four saves and fell to 0-2 on the year.
The Panthers return to action on Friday, Sept. 6 when they travel to Las Vegas, Nev. for the UNLV/Nike Invitational. GSU will face UC-Riverside on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET and tournament host UNLV Sunday at 4 p.m. ET.
