Men's Soccer Claims 3-0 Win Over UNC Asheville

ATLANTA - Georgia State claimed a 3-0 win over UNC Asheville Tuesday night at the GSU Soccer Complex in wet and sloppy conditions.

The host Panthers got on the board early just a little after nine minutes when Liam Fitzsimmons lifted a corner kick in front of the goal that Nenad Smiljanic headed on into the goal.  Just 90 seconds later, UNC Asheville GK Tyler Moore came out to challenge Hannes Burmeister and fouled him hard resulting in a yellow card and penalty kick. Burmeister nailed that kick and it was 2-0.  Moore received a blow to the head minutes later and had to leave the game as goalkeeper for UNCA.

The second half was mainly trying to stay afoot on the slippery field. GSU added its third goal late at 81:09 when Fitzsimmons again lofted a corner kick in front of the net that Conor Acheson took advantage of to head on into the net.

Georgia State controlled the tempo and the ball most of the evening with a 25-6 shot advantage with 10 shots on goal. UNC Asheville had seven saves. The Bulldogs played without their top scorer, who was sitting out from yellow card infractions from previous games.

This was Georgia State's fourth straight home win since a home-opening loss on the home field. The Panthers close out the home season Saturday afternoon with Senior Day against Sun Belt foe Howard.

Tonight was GSU's sixth game of the season with three or more goals scored and evens the slate at 7-7 with two regular season matches to play (one home, one away).
