NEW ORLEANS – Georgia State's women's tennis team faced lengthy rain delays in the quarterfinal match against Arkansas State in the Sun Belt Championships, but stayed focused to move on to the semifinals with a convincing 4-0 sweep of the Red Wolves.
The Panthers cruised to victory Friday without dropping a single set, winning four singles matches in straight-set fashion. Soon after the start of the match, rain in the New Orleans area forced the teams into a weather delay. The break had little effect on GSU, however, as all-conference recipient Linn Timmermann won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 to put GSU on top 1-0. Freshman Kristin Rehse followed suit at No. 4 singles, defeating Arkansas State's Sabina Jeresic 6-1, 6-0.
Freshman Veronika Golanova won 6-2, 6-0 in the sixth flight and Niri Rasolomalala sealed the deal with a sweet, 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2. Despite the dominant win, the match took 3:43 hours to complete due to the rain delays.
Georgia State joined the Sun Belt for the 2013 season and has since gone 6-1 in the conference tournament, winning the championship last season and losing in the final in 2013. The No. 2 seed Panthers will meet the No. 3 seed UT Arlington Mavericks in the semifinals. UTA defeated Troy 4-1 on Friday. GSU and UTA is set for an 11 a.m. start Saturday.
