NEW ORLEANS – Georgia State's women's tennis team finished its semifinal match versus UT Arlington at the Sun Belt Championships Sunday that was suspended due to weather on Saturday. The Panthers lost the doubles point and were eliminated from the tournament.
“Today was a really tough loss for us. I give a lot of credit to UTA. They bring a ton of energy to the match and made it very exciting. It could have gone either way,” head coach Jason Marshall said. “I'm really proud of our girls. We will only learn from today to motivate us to work harder. I really want to thank Chaimaa [Roudami] and Masa [Grgan] for all they have given to the GSU program.”
Georgia State battled back Saturday after losing the first three singles matches. Linn Timmermann, Chaimaa Roudami and Veronika Golanova each won their flights to tie things up at 3-3 and force doubles competition. However, play was suspended due to poor weather with the doubles point to be played Sunday morning.
The No. 3 doubles match was the first to be finished, going the Mavericks' way by a score of 6-3. Kristin Rehse and Niri Rasolomalala evened it up with a 6-4 win at No. 2. The top match went down to the wire as No. 86 Tarani Kamoe and Linn Timmermann battled to keep their team in the tournament. Tied at 6-6, UTA won the tiebreak 7-5 to advance to the championship and eliminate the Panthers.
