ATLANTA – Hosting the Southeast Sand Slam, Georgia State's sand volleyball team soaked up the sun while beating both UL Monroe and UAB Friday, improving to 18-1. The No. 7 Panthers have now won 13 in a row.
Georgia State (18-1) met UL Monroe (9-4) in the 11 a.m. match and jumped on top early with wins at Flights 4 and 5. Delaney Rohan and Nina Interwies played in the fourth spot and Jessica Fourspring was paired with Alexis Townsend at No. 5. Both duos won in straight sets. ULM came from behind at No. 2 to score the Warhawk's lone point, but Sara Olivova and Jansen Button clinched the victory in straight-set fashion at Flight 3. GSU put the cherry on top with an exciting, back-and-forth, three-set win by Majda Dostalova and Milani Pickering in the top match.
In the second match of the day, Georgia State battled with UAB (6-8) and pulled out a tight 3-2 win. Once again, the back end of the Panthers' lineup put GSU on top 2-0, this time with Fourspring and Interwies together at No. 4 and Rohan and Natalie Wilson at No. 5. Fourspring and Interwies own a 12-1 record this spring while Rohan and Wilson improve to 16-3. The Blazers won a pair of three-setters in the top two matches, but not before Olivova and Button sealed the win with a 21-9, 21-11 victory at No. 3.
Pairs competition also got underway on Friday as College of Charleston, UAB, UL Monroe and Georgia State completed the first round of the Gold Bracket. Rawls and Agnew faced CofC's No. 3 pair and won 21-14, 21-19 to advance to the second round. Olivova and Button won in straight sets as well over CofC's No. 2 pair to advance. The first round of the Silver Bracket will start at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
