ATLANTA - Georgia State edged Brown 3-2 Friday night in a match with all the scoring in the first half and a defensive battle in the second period.
GSU was home for just the second time this season and improved to 3-3 on the season, while Brown (28/21 in recent rankings) lost for the first time this year to stand at 3-1. Brown was No. 21 in the Soccer America poll, No. 28 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll and receiving votes in the NSCAA national rankings.
The host Panthers got on the board first late in the first half when Eddie Wilding slid the ball behind the diving goalkeeper on a penalty kick at 27:39 into the game. Three minutes later, Wilding was credited with a second goal as his shot was deflected by the keeper's shoulder and then rolled across the goal line.
Brown answered back within 10 minutes on a goal by Jack Hagstrom off an assist from Jack Gorab to make it 2-1. GSU took only 1:36 to score again when Rashid Alarape's pass to Casey Shultis was perfect to provide that goal at 42:30 in the first half. Brown scored just 33 seconds later on a goal from Will Cross off an assist from Mike Leone.
That meant all five goals were scored in just over a 15-minute span in the first half. The second half was a fast pace, but no goals could be scored. Brown ended with 15 shots, while the host Panthers had 12 shots. Brown had six shots on goal, GSU 5.
Goalkeeper Greyson Walldorff returned to the net after missing the last two matches and picked up his second win of the year.
GSU travels to South Carolina to face Presbyterian on Tuesday evening. That marks a fifth road game in the seventh game of the young season.
