SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Georgia State men's soccer team earned a big 4-2 road win on Tuesday night over USC Upstate as freshman Frank Rosenwald scored twice and Kwaku Adu scored the game-winner.
Following the 4-2 victory, the Panthers improved to 7-5 while the Spartans fell to 3-6.
The Panthers controlled the ball early in the match, with Rosenwald taking the first shot of the match in the second minute of play. A Spartan save kept the ball out of the net, but Rosenwald scored at the 26-minute mark off an assist from sophomore Hannes Burmeister. Burmeister and Max Hemmings set up the play by drawing the goalie out of the net on back-to-back shots.
GSU came out of the half up 1-0 and quickly took a larger lead, with junior Nick Hague scoring his first goal of the season under five minutes into the second half. Burmeister once again had the assist, his third of the season.
Adu scored his first goal of the season and the eventual game-winner to put in the Panthers up 3-0 in the 52nd minute of play, but a header from Michelangelo Dovidio cut GSU's lead to 3-1 at the 53 minute-mark. USC Upstate cut Georgia State's lead to 3-2 when Rinaldi Alphonse stole the ball and put it in the net.
Rosenwald scored the final goal of the match, his third of the season, with under 13 minutes in the second half off an assist from Rashid Alarape. The assist was the junior's fourth of the season, putting him in the lead for the team in assists.
Rosenwald led the team's 15 shots with five, all of which were on goal. Goalie Yannic Horn posted four saves against the Spartans, giving him 43 for the season.
“We're pleased to have several guys get a lot of good minutes out there and to get the win tonight,” head coach Brett Surrency said. “We didn't play our sharpest game, but we did enough to take care of the game and get another win.”
The Panthers will return to the field to host rival Georgia Southern on Oct. 8 in Panthersville. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and live stats will be available at GeorgiaStateSports.com. Admission to the GSU Soccer Complex is free of charge.
