Men's Soccer Falls to Rival Georgia Southern

ATLANTA- The Georgia State men's soccer team fell 3-1 to rival Georgia Southern Saturday night in the Sun Belt opener for both teams.

The Panthers fell to 7-6 overall (0-1 Sun Belt) while the Eagles improved to 5-5-1 (1-0 Sun Belt).

GSU started the match off strong, with sophomore Hannes Burmeister putting the Panthers up 1-0 after a penalty kick under five minutes into the match. The Panthers controlled the midfield for the first half of the match, outshooting the Eagles 5-1.

The Panthers came out of the half looking to maintain their lead, but Georgia Southern tied the match when Blake Wilson scored in the 69th minute. The Eagles went ahead quickly, with Emil Laursen scoring off a corner kick at the 70-minute mark.

Georgia Southern scored its final goal with four minutes left in the match, with Wilson scoring his second goal of the game.

The Panthers outshot the Eagles 10-7, but could not convert with just three shots on target.

The Panthers will be back on the field for their second Sun Belt match at Howard on Oct. 14. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
