ATLANTA- The Georgia State men's soccer team defeated Lipscomb 4-1 Friday night at the GSU Soccer Complex as sophomore Hannes Burmeister earned his second hat trick in as many games. Sophomore Max Hemmings scored the game-winning goal for the Panthers.
The Panthers won their second straight match to improve to 2-1, while the Bison fell to 2-1 this season.
Georgia State opened the match aggressively, controlling the midfield early. A goal by Logan Paynter of Lipscomb in the 22nd minute put GSU on defensive mode, with Yannic Horn making four saves in the first half.
Georgia State had several chances to score, but Lipscomb defenders put the Panthers in too much traffic to make a goal. The Panthers went into the half down 1-0.
The Panthers came out of halftime strong offensively, with Burmeister scoring at the 53-minute mark. Hemmings quickly followed the tying goal with what proved to be the game-winner, scoring less than five minutes later off an assist from Liam Fitzsimmons.
Hemmings assisted Burmiester on the next goal, putting GSU up 3-1 in the 63rd minute. Burmeister completed his hat trick off an assist from Rashid Alarape with 13 minutes to go in the match.
“I'm really happy with the way we came back in the second half after being a bit disorganized to start the game,” head coach Brett Surrency said. “Lipscomb is a good team and will go on to win a lot of games this year so we were pleased to walk away with a win tonight.”
Georgia State will return to Panthersville Sunday afternoon for a 1 p.m. kickoff against Central Arkansas. Live stats will be available at GeorgiaStateSports.com. Admission to the GSU Soccer Complex is free.
