Women's Tennis Tops Southern

What you need to know:

*GSU defeated Georgia Southern 5-2 Thursday morning at the GSU Clarkston campus.

*Lara Vovk, Daniela Ramirez, Damira Muminović, and Eva Chivu all won singles matches in two sets.

*The Panthers will face Arkansas State and UAB on Saturday.


ATLANTA- Georgia State women's tennis defeated Georgia Southern Thursday morning 5-2 at the GSU Clarkston campus. The win improves State to 4-9 on the season and 1-1 in Sun Belt play.

Georgia State was in a quick 2-0 hole after not having a singles player in the five and six flights. However, GSU was able to cut into the lead quickly picking up the doubles point. Eva Chivu and Daniela Ramirez cruised to a 6-1 win on court one, and Damira Muminović and Lara Vovk would follow with a 6-1 victory of their own.

Georgia State would dominate the singles play, going 4-0 against the Eagles. Ramirez tied the match 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-0 win on court two, and Muminović would follow with a 6-2, 6-0 win of her own to give the Panthers the 3-2 lead.

Freshman Eva Chivu would clinch the match for GSU on court one with a 6-3, 6-1 win before senior Lara Vovk completed the singles sweep winning 6-3, 6-3 on court four to give the Panthers a 5-2 win.

The Panthers are back on the Clarkston courts for a pair of matches Saturday. Georgia State will face Arkansas State at 10:30 a.m. before a nonconference meeting with UAB at 3:00 p.m.
