Georgia State Downs Opening Day Opponents

Beth Van Fleet's squads pick up two impressive victories to start the 2020 season

What you need to know:
*Georgia State defeated No. 10 FIU and UNF to go 2-0 on opening day.
*Three GSU pairs went 2-0 on the day.
*The Panthers return to the sand Saturday morning taking on Mercer and No. 18 FAU to wrap up play at the UNF Invitational.

Jacksonville, Fla.- The Georgia State Sandy Panthers dominated in a pair of wins Friday in Jacksonville, Fla. GSU defeated No. 10 FIU 4-1 before knocking off UNF by the same score.
 
Three Georgia State pairs, Eden Hawes and Maddy Delmonte, Maddie Gordon and Becky Tresham, and Kate Novack and Kelly Dorn all went 2-0 on the day.
 
During the opening match, Cara Guthrie and Mattie Johnson got things started with a win on court five. Maddie Gordon and Becky Tresham extended the lead to 2-0 with a three-set win on court four before Kate Novack and Kelly Dorn clinched the dual with a win on court three. Eden Hawes and Maddy Delmonte would win a straight set match to give the Panthers their fourth and final victory of the dual on the way to a 4-1 win.
 
In the second match of the day, the same five pairs took the sand. Gordon/Tresham made quick work of their opponents winning 21-14, 21-16, giving State the opening point. Guthrie/M. Johnson fought in a marathon match, but they were outlasted in position five. With the match tied, Dorn/Novack regained the lead with their second straight set win of the day. G. Johnson/Stasevich found their first win of the season to clinch the match before Hawes/Delmonte outlasted UNF to take the final point of the dual.
 
The Panthers are back in action Saturday morning for a pair of matches. GSU will face Mercer before battling No. 18 FAU to finish play on the weekend. Fans can follow along via live stats on our schedule page or live stream via Twitter.
