ATLANTA – The Georgia State women's tennis team opened the fall season with a successful weekend at the Mercer Gridiron Classic as new head coach Hannah Keeling made her Panther debut.
Junior Angel Carney finished the weekend with wins over Florida Southern and Jacksonville State in singles and fell to the No. 1-seed Lucie Petruzelova from Charlotte in a three-set battle 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.
Junior Alexia Alvarez earned an impressive 6-4 and 6-3 in singles over Troy.
Carney and Alvarez came away with two wins in doubles against the pairing of Bulatovic and Mosse from Jacksonville State 6-1, and the Mercer pair of Courville and Hollyfield 7-6.
Freshman Pragnya Kumar picked up her first college win in singles on Friday, and Maddy Frediani won her last two matches on Saturday and Sunday against Georgia Southwestern and ABAC.
"It was great to get back into competition this weekend and see a lot of matches," Keeling said. "We finished the weekend with some great moments and wins, but we also have a lot to continue to build on as we progress through the rest of the season. We are looking forward to competing again this weekend at Georgia Southern."
The Panthers will return to the court this Friday-Sunday, traveling to Statesboro, Ga., for the Georgia Southern Invitational.
