Wilkins OT Goal Tops Eagles 2-1; Sends GSU to MAC Tournament

Box Score ATLANTA – Facing a must win situation, Max Wilkins came through for the Georgia State men's soccer team with a goal in the second overtime to help the Panthers top Georgia Southern 2-1 on Thursday night at the GSU Soccer Complex.

Wilkins found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season in the 104th minute sending Georgia State (11-6, 3-3 MAC) to the Mid-American Conference Tournament next week.

The win jumped the Panthers ahead of Akron, Bowling Green, and Western Michigan into the No. 3 seed in next week's championship. Georgia State will face No. 2 seed West Virginia on Thursday at 4 p.m. ET, on the campus of top seed Northern Illinois.

Georgia Southern (4-12-1, 0-5-1 MAC) was looking to end Georgia State's season but fell just short, falling to the Panthers for a fourth-straight time.
Ramon Munoz got the Panthers on the board with his first goal of the season in the 69th minute. But just five minutes later Samuel Odame tied the game in the 74th minute for the Eagles which eventually sent the game into overtime.

Georgia State out-shot Georgia Southern 20-12, including a 3-0 advantage in overtime. Goalkeeper Gunther Rankenburg added to his MAC-leading save total with four on the night.

MATCH NOTES
  • The Panthers now own a 31-11-6 all-time record against the Eagles and have won four-straight in the series.
  • GSU is 5-2 at home this season having outscored their opponents 14-8 in those games.
  • Having already picked up their 10th win of the season, GSU has now won at least 10 matches in five of the last six seasons. The lone year Georgia State did not win 10 matches was last year when the program went 9-2-2 due to a shortened schedule because of COVID-19.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • Georgia State will advance to the MAC Tournament hosted by top seed Northern Illinois next week. The Panthers will be looking to play in a seventh-straight conference tournament championship game, last making the NCAA Tournament in 2018.
