TAMPA, Fla. – Georgia State fell to No. 34 USF 5-1 Saturday morning in the first of two matches in Florida this weekend. The loss drops the Panthers to 4-5 on the season, while propelling the Bulls to 8-2.
The Panthers stunned in doubles action defeating two ranked pairs. Harvey Maughan and Kevin Huynh, who have found recent success on court two, played in the top position. The pair struck first, defeating No. 21 Bollipalli/Wojcik. With the GSU lead, Steven Huynh and Andrei Duarte found a 6-3 result against No. 38 Ferguson/Luquet in their first outing of the season to clinch the one-point edge over the Bulls.
Despite the early success, Georgia State could not gain footing against USF in singles play. The Bulls cruised to victory on lines two, three, and six to take the sizable advantage. Vazha Shubladze, Mihai Marinescu, and Kevin Huynh all made valiant efforts in their second sets to keep the Panthers alive. Despite remaining competitive, South Florida found the victory on court four to clinch the team victory. Shortly afterwards, the Bulls would add to their point total with a victory over Huynh, who clinched last weekend's team victory, on court five. Shubladze held a one-set advantage on the top court, but ultimately his match went unfinished
Up next, Georgia State travels to DeLand, Fla., to face Stetson Sunday afternoon. First serve is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start time. Fans can follow along with the action via live stats. For more news and notes follow Georgia State men's tennis on Instagram and Twitter (@GSUMTennis.)
