ATLANTA – After dropping a match the day before, Georgia State bested Stetson 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. With the win, Georgia State holds a 5-5 record on the season, while Stetson falls to 2-4.
The Panthers continued to shine in doubles action. Kevin Huynh and Harvey Maughan started the day with a 6-3 result on court one, marking their fifth victory as a duo. Mihai Marinescu and Vazha Shubladze were able to close the doubles point in Georgia State's favor, downing their opposition 6-1 on the bottom court.
Shubladze set the tone in singles action with a 6-2, 6-3 result on the top court. Despite remaining competitive, Patrick Lazo fell on line five to give the Hatters their first point of the match. Senior Andrei Duarte remained strong and poised in his three-set match on court two. After falling in the first set, the Georgia native regained footing to take the match in three. Additionally, all of the other matches went to three-sets or tiebreakers to decide the winner. Rookie Mihai Marinescu clinched the team victory, outlasting his opposition on court four. Steven Huynh and Harvey Maughan continued to fight for individual results, despite already taking the overall win. Maughan found the final point for the blue and white with a super tiebreaker. Shortly afterwards, Huynh was surpassed on the sixth court as the Hatters added to their point total.
