PEACHTREE CITY - Georgia State women's tennis fell to ULM 4-1 in the opening round of the Sun Belt Championship on Thursday afternoon at the Peachtree City Tennis Center. The loss marks the last match of the 2021 season for the Panthers.
The squads both came out energetic and ready to open tournament action. The energy was reflected in close scores on each of the three courts in doubles action. Nansi Toskova and Maddy Frediani were bested by their opposition on the third court 6-3. The top two courts engaged in tight battles in hopes of taking the one-point advantage going into singles play. The Warhawks found a 7-5 victory on the top court to clinch the point.
The Panthers struggled to gain momentum in singles action, as ULM took five of the six first sets. The Warhawks extended their lead with a victory over Angel Carney on court two. Junior Andreea Stanescu, who leads the team in wins this, cruised to victory on the top court to earn a 6-3, 6-0 result to close the gap.
ULM did not slow down after the Panthers got on the board, finding wins on the bottom two courts to clinch the team victory.
