Huntsville, Ala. - Georgia State beach volleyball team downed Southern Miss, 5-0, on Friday at the John Hunt Sand Volleyball Complex in the first round of the CCSA Tournament to advance in the winner's bracket.
This marks the only match for the top-seeded Panthers on Friday. GSU will await the winner of Friday's No. 12 FIU vs. No. 14 FAU matchup at 1:00 p.m. ET on Saturday. Â
With the Sun shining brightly overhead, Georgia State jumped to a quick lead, taking the first set on each court except the top position. With all five flights on the courts at once, it was not long before GSU began collecting points.Â
Bella Ferary and Angel Ferary collected their 17th victory as a pair with a 21-14, 21-12 result on the fifth court. Bella Ferary leads the team this season with 22 wins. Maddie Gordon and Meagan McCall cruised to a 21-15, 21-13 decision to add to the GSU point total in position No. 4. Meanwhile, the team victory would be secured with a 21-15, 21-15 result by Olivia Stasevich and Mattie Johnson. The duo has accumulated the most victories as a pair this season for the blue and white with 19.Â
Shortly after the dual was clinched, Kelly Dorn, who was named to the CCSA All-Academic Team this week, and partner Kate Novack put the Panthers within striking distance of the sweep with a 21-16, 21-16 victory on the second court.
After stumbling in the first frame, Maddy Delmonte, also a CCSA All-Academic Team honoree, and longtime partner Eden Hawes, regained their footing in the second set. The pair did not look back after knotting the match, ultimately clinching the Georgia State sweep with a 15-21, 21-19, 15-6 win.
The Panthers will either face FAU for the second time this season or FIU for the first time in 2021. During the first meeting with FAU back in March, GSU stunned the Owls with a 4-1 upset. Georgia State last squared-off against the Panthers of FIU in last year's season opener. The GSU Sandy Panthers walked away with the 4-1 decision. Fans can follow along with tomorrow's action here.Â
