ATLANTA – Georgia State fell to Army 43-10 Saturday at Center Parc Stadium in the season opener for both teams.

Head coach Shawn Elliott got right to the point after the disappointing loss. "It all starts with the head coach, and the head coach did a very poor job of preparing our team," he said.

"We didn't play very well all the way around. It was an embarrassing effort, and I told our team, 'It falls on my shoulders.' I prepared the team, and it wasn't right the way, but we certainly know how to fix it. Our players understand what it's going to take change that mindset heading into next week."

Army executed its ball-control offense to perfection, collecting 258 yards rushing and four touchdowns, while the Panthers managed just 48 yards rushing and 129 yards passing in less than 18 minutes of possession time. Georgia State hurt itself with two turnovers and a couple of untimely penalties.

"Congratulations to Coach Monken and Army," Elliott continued. "This game was about toughness today, and you quickly saw who was the tougher team out there. We fumbled on our opening possession and things just went south from there.

After the Panthers' early fumble led to a 7-0 lead for Army, Georgia State had a chance to swing the momentum when Army fumbled a punt. In an unusual sequence of events, the Panthers recovered but were flagged for holding at the line of scrimmage. After the penalty, the ensuing punt was also fumbled and recovered by the Panthers, but that play, too, was nullified by another holding call. Army held onto the third punt.

"I don't think I've punted on a possession three times, recovered two fumbles and had two holding calls," said Elliott.

With GSU trailing 21-0 midway through the second quarter, the Panthers put together a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive, capped by Destin Coates' 16-yard touchdown run on the board with four minutes left in the half.

After forcing a punt, the Panthers took over at their own 7-yard line with 1:20 left, but quarterback Cornelius Brown IV was intercepted on the first play and Army tacked on another scored to take a 27-7 lead in the locker room.

One of the bright spots for the Georgia State offense was sophomore receiver Jamari Thrash, who stepped into the starting lineup and recorded career highs with seven receptions for 87 yards, including a spectacular one-handed grab on the Panthers' lone touchdown drive.

Coates scored his 16th career touchdown and finished with 48 yards, giving him an even 1,500 for his career and tying him with Travis Evans for second place in Georgia State history. Tra Barnett is the GSU career leader with 2,156 yards.

Super senior placekicker Noel Ruiz booted a 33-yard field goal, his ninth-straight field goal dating back to last season.

Brown was 12-for-20 for 129 yards passing.

Georgia State's early-season gauntlet continues as the Panthers travel to No. 9 North Carolina next Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. game on ESPN3 and Bally Sports South.
