Panthers Look To Extend Win Streak at Home

ATLANTA- Coming off back-to-back wins in successful outings at home, the Georgia State men's tennis team will look to defend home court again this weekend as GSU prepares for its fourth match of the spring against Stetson on Sunday, Feb. 6 at noon ET. The 2-1 Panthers will continue to count on veteran leadership from an experienced roster that has proven to be instrumental in the team's early-season success.

Playing at the No. 1 spot for GSU, senior Roberts Grinvalds was recently named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week following his dominant performance in the team's past win over USF. Grinvalds posted wins in both singles and doubles competition en route to a 4-3 victory for the Panthers.

Despite a roster that is stacked from top to bottom with upperclassmen, injuries have nevertheless resulted in missed time for key contributors on the team. As a result, the Panthers' entire unit has prepared for the possibility of entering the lineup at any moment.

In his first spring with GSU, freshman Edward Tymes has already had the opportunity to step up in a big way for the Panthers. One of only two underclassmen on the roster, Tymes posted a decisive victory, 6-2, 6-4, in the team's second match as he contributed toward a successful effort and a win over Wofford, 5-2.

The Panthers' adaptability and next man up mentality have served the team well. Just three matches into the season, six of the seven active players that have seen competition for GSU have already shifted court positions or changed doubles partners. The group has remained flexible with the lineup rotations and has responded with strong play as a collective.

GSU enters Sunday's competition with confidence and momentum as the Panthers are prepared to open play at the GSU Clarkson Courts for the first time this spring. Playing host to Stetson at the outdoor venue, Sunday will offer the team another opportunity to claim a home-court victory and extend its win streak.

Originally scheduled to play a weekend doubleheader with an additional home match against Tennessee Tech set for Friday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. ET, GSU was forced to postpone the competition due to the weather forecast calling for rain on Friday at the time of the match. The teams will reschedule the meeting for a later date still to be determined.

Live stats will be available for Sunday's match. Follow the GSU men's tennis team on Twitter and Instagram (@GSUMTennis) for the latest news and updates throughout the season.
