Shubladze Match Clincher Secures Victory for Panthers in Conference Opener on Saturday

ATLANTA- The Georgia State men's tennis team opened Sun Belt competition with a win, 4-3, over Troy on Saturday. Tied at 3-3, Vazha Shubladze clinched the match point for the Panthers with a win on court No. 3 as GSU secured its first conference victory and moved to 9-6 on the season.

GSU entered the match by posting wins on doubles courts No. 2 and No. 1 as No. 74 Andrei Duarte and Roberts Grinvalds saw victory at the top court giving the team an early lead, 1-0. Duarte and Grinvalds move to 10-3 as a pair with the win.

The Panthers extended the lead following a strong win, 6-2, 7-5, by Duarte on singles court No. 1. GSU dropped court No. 6 but proceeded to secure an additional point with Harvey Maughan's three set victory, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, on court No. 5 to add an additional point and jump out to a 3-1 advantage.

GSU dropped hard-fought three set contests on courts No. 2 and No. 4 as Troy evened the score at 3-3. Saturday's matchup saw four of six singles court positions decided in three sets.

Battling back after dropping the first set, Shubladze rallied for a victory, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2, in the third position as the senior claimed the court and secured the Panthers' ninth win. Shubladze has accounted for three match clinching performances since returning to competition having missed the first part of the season with an injury.

GSU will return to play on Sunday, March 20 hosting Sun Belt foe South Alabama. The outing will
mark the Panthers' first meeting with South Alabama since falling to the Jaguars in the conference title match a season prior. The series history between the schools is currently even at 6-6.

Sunday's match will be hosted by the Panthers at the GSU Clarkston Courts at 10 a.m. ET. Live stats will be available and posted to the team's social media accounts.
