Men's Tennis Plays Shorthanded, Drops Match Against Liberty on Sunday

ATLANTA- Following a split in competition in Friday's doubleheader, Georgia State men's tennis came up short in its final outing of the weekend as the Panthers fell to No. 72 Liberty, 4-3, on Sunday.

GSU entered the match playing shorthanded as senior Roberts Grinvalds sat out from Sunday's competition with an injury. With a significant adjustment in the team's doubles lineup, the Panthers battled but ultimately dropped the early point as Liberty took the lead, 1-0, entering singles.

The Panthers' roster was further depleted as senior Vazha Shubladze was forced to retire in his match on court No. 2 after re-aggravating a previous injury. Shubladze ended the match unfinished, down 2-5, as Liberty secured a second point for a 2-0 advantage.

After Liberty secured another point with a victory in court position No. 5 to take a 3-0 lead, Harvey Maughan fought to keep the Panthers alive in the second position. Despite a strong performance in three sets, the Panthers dropped court No. 2 as Liberty claimed its fourth point and the victory.

Playing out the match and refusing to quit, GSU continued fighting and eventually regained its energy in the back-half of the competition as the Panthers managed to secure points on court No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6.

Kevin Huynh remained steady in the No. 4 position and found victory, 6-4, 7-5, in straight sets to give the Panthers a point. Andrei Duarte bested his opponent in the top position, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3, and earned GSU a second point. Patrick Lazo proceeded to close out the match with a hard-fought three set victory in the No. 6 position to bring the final to 4-3.

Moving to 7-6 on the season, Sunday's outing marked the end of the Panthers' five match home stretch. GSU will return to action next weekend as the team travels to face Chattanooga on Sunday, March 13 at 1 p.m. ET for its final non-conference contest before entering conference play.
