Panthers Blank Alabama State in Fifth Shutout Victory of the Spring

ATLANTA- Georgia State women's tennis closed out the weekend on Sunday with back-to-back shutout victories as the Panthers defeated Alabama State, 4-0. With Angel Carney clinching the match with her eighth consecutive singles victory, the win marks the team's fifth shutout of the spring as GSU improves to 7-4 on the season and prepares to enter conference play.

After returning empty handed from a season opening road trip to Florida that saw GSU drop three-straight matches to open the spring, the Panthers have posted dominant performances in every outing since with the team's sole loss coming at the hands of an undefeated, nationally ranked Kennesaw State team by a narrow margin, 4-3.

Coming off a Saturday contest that saw GSU shut out Florida A&M, 7-0, Sunday's match against Alabama State would prove to be another successful outing for GSU as the Panthers secured the win following a decisive victory in doubles and courts No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 posting swift victories in straight sets. Andreea Stanescu collected another strong win, 6-0, 6-1, in the second position as the senior accounted for a 4-0 record in singles and doubles play over the weekend.

Pragnya Kumar posted a victory in singles, 6-1, 6-2, in the fifth position to earn the Panthers a third point. The freshman remains unbeaten in singles play with one match unfinished.

Carney's win in the No. 4 position sealed the victory for GSU as the Panthers concluded the weekend doubleheader and wrapped up regular season non-conference competition.

Securing wins in seven of its previous eight outings, GSU will open conference play next weekend with matches against Coastal Carolina on Saturday, March 12 and Appalachian State on Sunday, March 13. Both matches will be hosted by the Panthers at the GSU Clarkston Courts. Live stats will be available.
