Panthers Down Louisiana, 4-0, Advance to SBC Championship Semifinal

Box Score Peachtree City, Ga.— Entering the Sun Belt Conference Championship as the No. 2 overall seed in the tournament, the Georgia State women's tennis team secured a victory over Louisiana with a sweep, 4-0, in the conference quarterfinal at Peachtree City Tennis Center on Friday. With Eva Chivu clinching the match point and a win for GSU at the top singles court, the Panthers advance to the SBC semifinal and will face UT Arlington on Saturday, April 23.

GSU quickly secured the doubles point for an early advantage, 1-0, with wins at courts No. 1 and No. 3. Top pair Angel Carney and Sofya Golubovskaya downed opponents at the first court, 6-0, while Chivu teamed with Pragnya Kumar to defeat opponents at the third court, 6-1.

Carney and Golubovskaya enter the tournament having been named All-Sun Belt Doubles Second-Team as announced by the conference this past Thursday.

The Panthers opened singles play with confidence and jumped out to first-set leads at all six court positions. Carney secured a second point for GSU with a resounding win, 6-1, 6-0, at court position No. 4.

Carney received All-Sun Belt Singles Second-Team honors and was named the SBC Player to Watch for 2022. With the win, the junior extends her winning streak to 16 and is now one singles match victory away from tying the school record for consecutive wins at 17.

Alexia Alvarez charted a victory, 6-2, 6-2, at the sixth court position as the Panthers took a 3-0 advantage. Chivu's victory, 6-3, 6-4, at single court No. 1 clinched the final point and a win for GSU.

With the win, Chivu has clinched victories for the Panthers in back-to-back outings. The senior was named All-Sun Belt Singles First-Team on Thursday and helped lead GSU to a share of the SBC Regular-Season Title with her match-clinching victory against Georgia Southern last weekend.

Moving to 17-5, head coach Hannah Keeling and the Panthers now tie the school record for wins in a season. GSU moves to 10-1 for overall conference play.

The Panthers' semifinal matchup against UTA will be played at Peachtree City Tennis Center at 2 p.m. ET. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats will be provided by the conference.
