Men's Tennis Closes 2022 Campaign at NCAA Championship

Box Score ATHENS, Ga.— In its seventh trip to the NCAA National Collegiate Men's Tennis Championship, the No. 59 ranked Georgia State men's tennis team closed its spring 2022 season with a loss, 4-1, facing No. 28 Florida State for the first round of tournament play at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Friday.

The Panthers end the season posting a 17-8 overall record for the year, highlighted by the Sun Belt Conference regular season title and the team's third SBC Tournament Championship.

All-Sun Belt Doubles First-Team top pair Andrei Duarte and Roberts Grinvalds knocked off Maks Silagy and Joshua Karpenschif, 6-3. With FSU evening the doubles count with a win at the No. 2 court, the early point was to be decided at the No. 3 court position.

FSU's Alex Bulte and Youcef Rihane narrowly edged GSU's Patrick Lazo and Diego Padilha, 6-4, as the Seminoles gained the early lead in the match, 1-0. The Panthers finished the spring charting doubles victories in 19 of 25 outings.

Entering singles play, Harvey Maughan earned a point for the Panthers with a win, 6-3, 6-1, over Richard Thongoana of FSU at the No. 4 flight. Hard fought battles across all positions would see GSU fall short as FSU clinched the match with victories at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 court positions.

"What an emotional match today was for our team," head coach Jonathan Wolff said. "All season long, it has been our motto to never stop believing in one another and keep fighting until the last point on the court. Today was no exception as we were very close to turning that match around. Credit to a well-coached FSU team as they were just a little too strong for us today."

Wolff was named Sun Belt Conference's Coach of the Year for the 2022 season. The head coach has led the Panthers to five straight SBC Championship title appearances throughout his tenure at GSU.

"What an experience for our seniors," Wolff said. "With some of them playing the final match of their careers, they have nothing to hang their heads about. I'm so proud to have been their coach over these years, and I have so many amazing memories I will cherish for a lifetime. I'm excited for the bright future ahead for our program, as well as the legacy that the seniors are leaving behind for our underclassmen and incoming class."
