Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Panthers Fall to Elon, UNC Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C.— Georgia State men's tennis saw defeat in a pair of road matches over the weekend versus Elon and UNC Wilmington. Despite the team falling to 1-7 following the losses, sophomore Edward Tymes and freshman Diogo Morais posted strong performances in each match to add to both players' impressive play thus far for 2023.

Tymes holds a 4-3 record in singles competing at court positions three-six for the Panthers. The sophomore notched a three-set victory, 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9), at the fifth court facing UNCW on Sunday to give GSU its only point of the match.

Morais has charted a 3-4 record at the third and fourth courts for GSU, including a victory in three sets, 6-2, 6-7, 10-6, versus Elon on Saturday. The newcomer has also partnered with teammate Roberts Grinvalds at the top doubles court for a 2-2 record, while securing another victory at doubles No. 2 alongside teammate Diego Padilha.

After dropping a close doubles point facing Elon on Saturday, the Panthers opened singles play and were defeated on courts No. 2, No. 6 and No. 5 as Elon clinched match point. Playing out the match, GSU lost matches on the first and third courts before collecting a point at court No. 4 with the victory by Morais.

The match ended by a count of 6-1 in Elon's favor.

Sunday saw GSU travel for a noon outing against UNCW. The Panthers once again came up short in doubles, then dropped at singles No. 6, No. 4 and No. 2 as UNCW clinched the match.

The Panthers fell at positions No. 1 and No. 3 before Tymes earned GSU a point with the fifth-court victory, and the team dropped its second match over the weekend facing UNCW by a final count of 6-1.

The Panthers return home to Atlanta next week and will host Presbyterian on Friday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. ET. The match will be contested at the GSU Clarkston Courts with information regarding live stats available later in the week.
