Women's Tennis Drops Matches Facing Western Carolina, Gonzaga

ATLANTA— Georgia State women's tennis fell in its matches facing Western Carolina on the road and Gonzaga at home over the weekend. Continuing spring 2023 play shorthanded having been forced to default at singles court six in every match since entering the season, the Panthers fall to 0-8 following the losses despite consistently competitive team performances and strong play from freshman newcomer Maria Paredes as well as fifth-year veteran Eva Chivu.

Chivu posted a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win in singles competition facing Western Carolina on Saturday. The fifth-year native of Romania holds a 3-4 record playing the top singles court for GSU this spring.

Competing for the Panthers at court No. 3 with one appearance at court No. 4, Paredes currently sits at 3-1 for singles competition. The freshman ended both matches over the weekend unfinished but leading a set up, 6-1, 4-3, facing Gonzaga, and 6-2, 5-4, facing Western Carolina.

With the default at singles position six in Saturday's match against Western Carolina, GSU saw itself 0-2 down entering singles play after a narrow loss in doubles. Chivu's top-court victory earned the Panthers a point in the match, but another default due to injury at the fifth court followed by a loss at the fourth court gave Western Carolina its fourth point and a victory in the match.

With a clinch-clinch format, the match ended at 4-1 in Western Carolina's favor.

Sunday saw GSU return to Atlanta and host west coast foe Gonzaga at 10 a.m. ET. The Panthers once again dropped a tight doubles outing, then came up short at the first and second singles courts as GSU fell in the match, 4-0.

GSU will be off this weekend before returning to play on Tuesday, Feb. 28 for a road battle facing Kennesaw State. The match will take place at Betty Siegel Courts in Kennesaw, Ga. at 2 p.m. ET.

More information will be announced later in the week via the team's social media and on the web. Follow Georgia State women's tennis on Twitter (@GSUWTennis) and Instagram (@GSUWomensTennis) for news and updates throughout the 2023 season.
