Women's Tennis Travels to Alabama to Face Samford, UAB

ATLANTA— Georgia State women's tennis returns to play on the road this weekend with a pair of matches facing Samford and UAB on Saturday and Sunday. The team enters the weekend having played down one player in its previous four outings and is currently seeking its first win of 2023.

GSU fell short in its home opener hosting Mercer last Saturday and looks to prepare for the back-to-back weekend matches in Alabama. The Panthers have been forced to default at the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles court positions in each of the team's previous four matches this spring.

Despite the string of losses for GSU while playing shorthanded to open the year, Maria Paredes has made an immediate impact to the team since joining the Panthers' roster for the spring.

Paredes charted a strong 6-4, 6-3 win over her opponent from Mercer on Saturday while playing the third singles court position. A freshman native of Spain, the newcomer has jumped out to a 2-1 record with one match unfinished up, 6-4, 4-3, competing at the No. 3 and No. 4 courts for singles.

Eva Chivu rejoined the Panthers' roster for 2023 and has competed at the top singles court in every match for GSU. Chivu posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the first court last weekend facing Mercer.

The Panthers travel to Birmingham, Ala. on Saturday, Feb. 11 for a meeting with Samford at 1 p.m. ET. Live streaming will be available for the match via the link below.
