No. 10 Sandy Panthers Face Ranked Foes at Tampa Invitational

TAMPA, Fla.— After opening the season with four straight wins, the No. 10 ranked Georgia State beach volleyball team faces three straight nationally-ranked opponents,  including No. 3 TCU, at the Tampa Invitational Friday and Saturday:

Friday, 8 a.m. vs. No. 6 Grand Canyon
Friday, 12 noon vs. No. 11 Stetson
Saturday, 10 a.m. vs. No. 3 TCU
Saturday, 2 p.m. vs. Florida Gulf Coast

Last spring in the 2022 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship, Georgia State upset then No. 2-ranked TCU, equalling the highest-ranked opponent that Georgia State has defeated in any sport.

The Sandy Panthers (4-0) enter the second week of 2023 having secured decisive victories in each match last week, led by strong performances from sisters Angel Ferary and Bella Ferary, as well as Yasmin Kuck and Lila Bordis.

The Ferary duo teamed at the first and second flights for competition in Jacksonville last weekend and charted an undefeated 4-0 record as a pair. The sisters notched straight-set victories in three of four outings for GSU, securing wins in all but one set.

Kuck and Bordis partnered at the third flight and charted wins in straight sets for all four matches in Jacksonville last week. Maddy Delmonte and Ayla Johnson paired for a 3-1 record at the fourth flight, and Aliisa Vuorinen teamed with Destiny White, also posting a 3-1 record.

As a team, GSU posted wins on 16 of 20 courts throughout the tournament in Jacksonville, downing Sun Belt Conference foe Charleston, Palm Beach Atlantic, Tampa and tournament host Jacksonville.

UP NEXT

The Sandy Panthers gear up for the Tampa Invitational beginning Friday, March 3. The dual match tournament hosted by Tampa will include meetings with three AVCA top-20 ranked opponents.

Day one of competition will see GSU battle No. 6 Grand Canyon at 8 a.m. ET, followed by No. 11 Stetson at noon ET. The Sandys faced GCU for the first round of the 2022 NCAA Championship in Gulf Shores last season and knocked off the No. 7-seeded Lopes to advance to the second round.

Saturday, March 4 will mark the second day of competition in Tampa with another pair of matches slated for the Sandys. GSU will face No. 3 TCU at 10 a.m. ET as well as Florida Gulf Coast at 2 p.m. ET.

GSU downed No. 2 seed TCU in the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2022 and looks to rematch the Horned Frogs for the first time since the victory. The historic win for GSU marked the largest upset in NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship tournament history.
