Panthers Close Regular Season Winning Four of Last Five Matches

ATLANTA— Georgia State men's tennis notched consecutive victories at home over the weekend and closed the 2023 regular season with a 4-2 win over Sun Belt Conference foe Southern Miss on Sunday. The back-to-back victories saw freshman Gabriele Datei clinch match point against Louisiana on Saturday followed by USM on Sunday, as the Panthers enter SBC Tournament competition next weekend having posted wins in four of the team's last five outings.

Following Datei's top-court clincher that propelled the Panthers to a 4-3 victory over the Rajin Cajuns on Saturday, the freshman once again posted a three-set victory at the first singles court to secure the team its fourth conference victory for the spring. Datei has notched four victories over SBC foes with nine total victories for the season playing the top-three courts for GSU.

After dropping the early point in doubles entering Sunday's match facing the Golden Eagles, Edward Tymes charted a win in straight sets at the fifth singles court to even the match at 1-1. Victories by Diogo Morais and Roberts Grinvalds at singles courts No. 3 and No. 2 would lift the Panthers to a 3-1 advantage before Datei claimed the top court and secured a team victory for GSU.

The teams opted to play out the match, with GSU dropping at No. 4 singles. Ricardo Batista battled to three sets at the sixth court before rain would force the match to be suspended and end at a 4-2 count in the Panthers' favor.

The Panthers improve to 7-15 overall with a 4-4 mark for conference play following the pair of wins over the weekend.

Fifth-year seniors Roberts Grinvalds and Diego Padilha were honored for Senior Day following each players' final home match in Atlanta on Sunday. Grinvalds and Padilha close home competition for GSU having helped lead the Panthers to Sun Belt Conference title appearances for every season since arriving at GSU in 2018-19.

The Panthers will enter the 2023 SBC Championship slotted as the No. 6 overall seed in the tournament and will rematch No. 3-seeded Louisiana for first-round competition on Thursday, April 20. Match time is slated for 10 a.m. ET at Peachtree City Tennis Center.

Tournament matches will be broadcast on ESPN+ with live stats provided by the conference. Further information regarding the SBC title will be released later in the week.
