Padilha Clinches Conference Win Over Coastal Carolina

ATLANTA— Georgia State men's tennis posted a 5-2 win over Sun Belt Conference foe Coastal Carolina on Sunday as Diego Padilha clinched match point for the Panthers with a three-set victory at the third singles court. The fifth-year graduate rallied back down a set to force the match tiebreak before charting a 6-4 win in the third set to secure the team its first conference victory of 2023.

GSU entered Sunday's match in Atlanta by posting a strong doubles victory and taking an early advantage in match play. Roberts Grinvalds and Gabriele Datei notched a win at the top court, while Edward Tymes and Harrison Kim won at the third court and gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead entering singles.

Datei earned a 7-6, 6-3 victory at the top singles court, and Tymes secured a win at the fourth court as GSU added two points to its total. With a loss at court No. 6, the Panthers led 3-1 with matches on courts No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 awaiting conclusions.

GSU dropped at the second singles court and CCU earned a second point to narrow the score margin. With the Panthers leading 3-2 for the match, Padilha rallied back from a 6-7, 4-5 deficit at court No. 3 and secured second and third-set victories.

The three-set clincher by Padilha at No. 3 singles brought the score to 4-2 overall for the match, before an additional victory by Ricardo Batista at court No. 5 would earn GSU a fifth point and close the match with a 5-2 final count.

GSU began the week of competition with a road match in North Carolina against Charlotte. The Panthers fought in doubles as Ginvalds and Datei secured the top court with a 6-4 win.

After dropping at the second court, GSU saw a narrow 7-6 loss at the third court and the 49ers took an early 1-0 advantage. Grinvalds posted a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles to earn GSU a point in the match, but losses at courts three-six would give Charlotte a 5-1 match victory.

GSU currently charts a 4-14 overall record for the spring with a 1-3 mark in conference play.

The Panthers will return to action next weekend and travel for a pair of conference matchups in Alabama. The team visits rival South Alabama on Saturday, April 8, then heads north for a meeting facing Troy on Sunday, April 9.

More information regarding the team's matches in Alabama will be announced later in the week. Follow Georgia State men's tennis on social media (@GSUMTennis) for continued updates and coverage of the Panthers' 2023 campaign.
