COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Georgia State shut out South Carolina 1-0 on the road at Stone Stadium.
The Panthers' high-pressure approach posed difficulties for South Carolina's backline throughout the first half. In the 18th minute, the Panthers capitalized on a South Carolina giveaway when Justin McLean delivered a perfectly weighted cross to Simon Carlson. Carlson then headed the ball past the goalie, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers finished the first half with a 7-0 corner kick advantage, and did not allow a single shot attempt by the Gamecocks.
South Carolina's first shot didn't come until the 65th minute of the game. In the 89th and 90th minutes, Josue Hangi made two game-saving diving saves.
GSU totaled eight shots with only one shot on target. South Carolina totaled six shots with three on target.
The win boosted Georgia St.'s record to 3-2-3 overall and 1-0-1 in SBC play.
The Panthers return to the pitch on Tuesday Sept. 26 and will host Lipscomb University at the GSU Soccer Complex.
