ATLANTA – Georgia State University announces the hiring of Evan Smith as the new head coach of the Panthers' men's golf team, as announced by Atheltic Director Charlie Cobb.
With over a decade of experience in the golf industry, including three years of collegiate coaching and a distinguished background in military leadership, Smith brings a unique blend of strategic, athletic, and administrative expertise to the program.
Smith joins Georgia State after serving as assistant men's golf coach at Georgia Tech from August 2024 to August 2025. During his tenure, he contributed to all facets of the Yellow Jackets' nationally respected program, including recruiting, fitness development, practice planning, fundraising, and the management of advanced golf technology at Tech's Noonan Practice Facility.
Before his time at Tech, Smith served as the head coach for both the men's and women's golf teams at St. Andrews University (N.C.) in 2018–19, and prior to that, as assistant coach and director of golf at Point University (Ga.) from 2016 to 2018. At Point, Smith guided the men's team to back-to-back Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) championships and the program's first two appearances in the NAIA National Championship. He earned AAC Assistant Coach of the Year honors in both seasons.
A native of Kennesaw, Ga., Smith's career trajectory also includes five years of military service in the U.S. Army, where he graduated from the Army School of Infantry as class first sergeant and served as team leader in the 2-1 Infantry Battalion at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. He held roles in reconnaissance and strategic mission planning during the Pacific Pathways Operation and was later selected as personal security detail and Command Team Aide to the Brigade Commander. His military distinctions include the Army Commendation Medal (twice), the Army Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Korean Defense Medal.
Smith holds a bachelor's degree in business management from Point University, where he also played three seasons of collegiate golf and qualified for NJCAA Nationals in 2013.
