Now in his second season at the helm, Terry Hutchinson was named the next Georgia State volleyball head coach on Feb. 3, 2022.
A former top assistant coach with ties to the state of Georgia, Hutchinson came to Atlanta following five years at Towson, where he helped lead the Tigers to three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2019-21.
In 2021, Towson went 26-5 and 12-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), winning the conference’s tournament title before falling to Penn State in four sets in the NCAA Tournament.
He helped guide Towson to a CAA Championship during the 2020-21 COVID-19 shortened season, including an undefeated regular season before advancing to the NCAA Tournament in April.
In 2019, Hutchinson helped Towson to a 29-3 record, including a perfect 16-0 mark in CAA play, a CAA tournament title and into the second round of the NCAA Tournament where the Tigers nearly pulled off an upset of No. 11 Penn State to reach the Sweet 16.
Hutchinson coached the Tigers to becoming one of the best blocking teams in the country. Towson has been consistently ranked in the top 20 nationally in blocks per set and opponent hitting percentage during his tenure. Within his recruiting duties, Hutchinson helped bring 2019 CAA Rookie of the Year Lydia Wiers, a middle blocker, to Towson.
Prior to his stint at Towson, Hutchinson worked at Georgia Southern, where he was responsible for recruiting, training the middle blockers, and teaching the blocking schemes for the team.
Hutchinson also served as an assistant coach for two years at Elizabethtown College and spent a year at Franklin & Marshall College.
Hutchinson began his coaching career in 2003 with the Norlanco Girls’ Volleyball Club and spent time coaching the Yorktowne and Spooky Nook Volleyball Clubs in central Pennsylvania. He also served as the varsity head coach at Manheim Township High School for four years.
Hutchinson started his collegiate career at Juniata College before transferring to East Stroudsburg University. He helped the Warriors make a pair of appearances in the EIVA Division I national semifinals. Hutchinson was nationally ranked for blocking in 1995 and 1996 and earned All-EIVA Division I honors in 1996.
