M Soccer Falls 2-1 in Last Second of 2 OT

ATLANTA (Nov. 2, 2007)  The Georgia State men's soccer team (4-11-1, 1-8 CAA) played to the last second, but couldn't hold on to the 1-1 tie in double overtime as the Dukes of James Madison (7-7-3, 5-3-0 CAA) escaped Panthersville with a 2-1 victory on Friday afternoon.

“We played hard today and I'm excited that the team gave 110 percent,” said head coach Kerem Daser.  “But I'm disappointed that we dropped this one in the last second of the match.”

The Panthers jumped on the board first as defender Tim Lonergan connected with sophomore midfielder Brett Cummins off of a corner kick taken by junior midfielder Eduardo Liza.  However the celebration didn't last long as James Madison answered back just two minutes later with an unassisted goal by freshman forward, CJ Sapong.

“The guys brought their A game today and it was exciting to see us score first, but frustrating to have James Madison answer back so quickly,” said Daser.

The score stayed at an even 1-1 for the remainder of the game despite attempts by both sides to give their teams the advantage.  Georgia State matched the Dukes in shots in the first period with five, but was out shot in the second period by a margin of nine to four.  Midfielder Floreal Pedrazo led the Panthers in shots with three and three on goal while Brian Forero, Linus Warendh, and Eduardo Liza recorded two each.  Junior goalkeeper Filipe Carvalho finished with six saves on the day.

After what seemed would be a tied game as the second overtime began to wind down, the Dukes capitalized on a late corner kick.  With just one second left on the clock, sophomore defender Billy Swetra scored to give James Madison the 2-1 victory.

The Panthers will challenge VCU on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Panthersvile.  Sunday is also senior day for five Panthers- Floreal Pedrazo, Tim Lonergan, Javon Carringon, Justin Devito, and Iain MacGowan.
