Rock Hill, S.C. (Nov. 19) ? Georgia State lost to Winthrop, 67-57, at Winthrop Coliseum on Monday night. Winthrop, who is third in the nation in field goal defense (31.4 percent) and 39th in points allowed (55.9) kept State in check with 35 percent (21-of-60) and 57 points.
Georgia State (2-6) was led by 16 points and nine rebounds from forward Shay Rawls and 13 points from guard Brittany Hollins. State held a 41-39 rebounding advantage.
“Our scoring is still inconsistent and we need folks to be the ones to say I will step up and lead,” Coach Lea Henry said after the game. “We know we will get a big boost when Chandrica Smith joins us in a few days, but we have to learn to reduce our unforced turnovers and find more people who want to score. The most important part of the schedule is still ahead of us and I still feel good that things are going to click and we can go on a winning streak.”
Winthrop (8-3) improves to 4-1 at home. The Eagles shot 54 percent outside the three-point line tonight (7-of-13) and got19 points from Tiffany Rodd (5-of-9 treys) and 19 points from Ashley Fann. Winthrop shot a sizzling 65 percent in the second half.
Winthrop built a five-point halftime lead into double figures early in the second half and State could never make a serious run to take the lead. The Panthers trailed 52-43 with six minutes to go and 58-49 with 3:45 left, but could never cut it any closer.
The game started with the visiting Panthers opening a 6-2 lead before the first media timeout at 15:56 as Hudson, Hollins and Rawls opened the scoring for State. When the host Eagles gained the lead for the first time at 11:38 (9-6), State answered by moving out to a 14-11 advantage at the 10-minute mark and 16-13 with 8:30 to go. Winthrop's Rodd then made four consecutive three-point baskets to spark the Eagles' four-minute 17-9 run to spark a 30-25 halftime lead.
Georgia State returns to meet downtown rival Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the Georgia State Sports Arena.
