Panthers Split With Owls in Spring Showdown

Panthersville, Ga ? The Georgia State softball team split a pair of games on the final day of the GSU Spring Showdown, moving its record to 14-2, as they defeated Kennesaw State 2-0, while dropping the Championship game against the Owls 7-3 at Bob Heck Field in Panthersville.

In the first game, freshman pitcher Alicia Mills garnered the win, allowing only one hit, while fanning 12, improving her record to 5-0. Freshman catcher Catherine Lee blasted her fourth home run of the tournament, putting the Panthers over the Owls 2-0.

Lee put the Panthers on the board in the bottom of the fourth after Natasha Berry drew a walk to start the inning. With Berry on first and no outs, Lee smashed home run over the right field fence, giving the Panthers the only runs they would need.

In the Championship game, the Panthers took the lead in the bottom of the third when Rebecca Roles led off with a single up the middle. With two outs, Natasha Berry hit a hard line shot to left field. Roles safely scored when the Owls shortstop bobbled the incoming throw. A poor throw to the plate allowed Berry to come around and score, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

The Owls fought back as Laura Stallings connected for a solo home run to left center in the fourth, while an RBI single from Jessica Cross in the fifth evened the score at 2-2.

In the top of the eighth, with the International Tiebreaker Rule in effect, the Owls strung together a pair of walks, a single and three-run home run to put Kennesaw up 7-2 as the Panthers failed to score in the bottom of the eighth.

Georgia State returns to action Monday when they face NC State (9-11) at 1 p.m. at Bob Heck Field in Panthersville.
