ATLANTA, Ga. (February 7, 2009) The Georgia State softball team dropped the season opener when Georgia Tech out-hit the Panthers to win the doubleheader 8-1, 7-1. The Panthers smashed five hits in game one and eight game two, while scoring a single run in both games.
Georgia Tech hit three home runs in game one, including two by first baseman Whitney Haller and one by pitcher Tiffany Johnson.
In game one, Haller hit a home run over the left field fence in the top of the first inning. Georgia State quickly answered at the bottom of the inning when junior Danielle Roddy scored off of a center field single by Lily Skelton.
The score was tied until the fourth inning when the Yellow Jackets extended their lead and scored six runs, when a series of errors hit the Panthers. Johnson homered over the left field fence, driving in three runs. Georgia Tech scored their final run in the seventh inning off of a sacrifice fly.
Freshman pitcher Alana Thomas made her first career start in game two and pitched for 5.1 innings, holding the Yellow Jackets to eight hits. Junior transfer from the University of Georgia, Kate Gaskill made her first appearance as a Panther, as did freshman Erin Collins.
The Panthers lone run in game two came in the bottom of the sixth when Lauren Jones singled to left field and allowed Roddy to score.
The Panthers are back in action on Wednesday, February 11th at 6 p.m. as they travel to take on the Auburn Tigers. Game recap will be available at www.georgiastatesports.com
