Late Homer Propels Owls Past Panthers

KENNESAW, Ga. -- A sixth-inning two-run homer by Kennesaw State's Jenna Closner propelled the Owls to a 2-0 victory over Georgia State on Saturday at Bailey Park.

After a Kelsey Kulk walk, Closner took a McCall Langford pitch over the right center field fence to give the Owls the deciding runs.

On the day. Langford (3-1) pitched 5.2 innings allowing two runs on four hits. Kennesaw State pitcher Jessica Cross (4-1) shutout the Panthers allowing only four hits while striking out nine GSU batters.

The Panthers struggled at the plate all day only garnering four hits while leaving seven on base.

In the first, Chelsea Sparks led off with a single to center field and Rebecca Roles broke her hitting slump with a double to left field but three straight outs left runners on second and third to end the inning.

The Panthers (7-3) again left two runners on second and third in the fourth inning. Two-straight outs followed a Lauren Jones single and Danielle Roddy walk to end GSU's chances to break the scoreless tie.

The same pair made it on base in the top of the sixth with a Jones single and Roddy walk, but again the Panthers failed to capitalize on base runners as Cross continued to find ways to get out of trouble.

Leading the way for the Panthers was Jones who was 2-for-3 while Sparks and Roles each had a hit. Jensen Hackett was 2-for-3 for KSU (7-4) while Closner had the big two-run home run to win the game for the Owls.

GSU next returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Howard in a doubleheader at Bob Heck Field that is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
